Origin and history

The Honfleur Hospice, located in Calvados in Normandy, is an iconic building dating back to the 16th century. Founded around 1550, it initially housed a hospital intended to accommodate the sick and the poorest in the port city. The chapel, built in 1580, illustrates the religious architecture of the period, mixing flint and white stone, with a spacious nave and a characteristic flat bedside.

In the 17th century, the Hospice extended with the construction of an additional wing, whose facades and roofs will later be protected for their heritage value. The building underwent extensive work in the 18th century because of its degraded condition, reflecting the challenges of its maintenance throughout the centuries. The chapel, meanwhile, preserves remarkable elements such as original windows and an ancient organ, reflecting the rich artistic and religious past of the region.

Partially listed as a historical monument in 1975, the chapel was entrusted to an association in 2004, ensuring its preservation and openness to the public. Today, the site embodies both Honfleur's hospital history and Norman architectural evolution, while remaining a place of memory and culture for the local community. Its central location, Place Jean-de-Vienne, makes it a landmark in the city's historic urban landscape.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its past social role and current importance as a protected heritage. The classified elements — chapel, facades and roofs of the 17th century wing — recall the ingenuity of former builders and the desire to preserve this legacy for future generations. The city is part of the historical monuments of Calvados, contributing to the cultural richness of Normandy.
