Arrow and apse of the chapel: inscription by decree of 19 January 1927

Origin and history

Orbec is an iconic building located in the city of Orbec, Calvados department, Normandy. Built between the 15th and 16th centuries, it bears witness to the architecture and charitable practices of this period. Although little detail is available on its foundation, its existence reflects the importance of medieval hospices, places of welcome for the poor, the sick and the travellers.

The Saint-Denis Chapel, integrated into the Hospice, is distinguished by its arrow and apse, inscribed as the Historic Monuments since 19 January 1927. This classification underscores the heritage value of these architectural elements, characteristic of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance religious buildings. Now owned by the municipality, the Hospice remains a vestige of the region's hospitable and religious past, although its current use is not specified in the available sources.
