Origin and history

The Ango-de-la-Motte Hotel is a former mansion located in Argentan, Orne department, Normandy. Built in the 17th and 18th centuries, it is distinguished by its classical architecture and rectangular plan. The building is particularly remarkable for its inside staircase to the French, typical of this period.

The hotel is located at the corner of Rue Saint-Germain and Rue de la Vicomté, opposite the church Saint-Germain d'Argentan. It was listed as a Historic Monument on September 27, 1948, recognizing its heritage value. Available sources, such as Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its importance in the local architectural heritage.

Argentan, the city where this hotel is located, was at that time a dynamic urban centre in Lower Normandy. Private hotels, like this one, often reflected the social status of their owners, usually from the bourgeoisie or the local nobility. These urban residences served as both a place of life and a place of representation, illustrating the way of life of the provincial elites under the Old Regime.
