Origin and history
The hotel Baour is a mansion built in the 18th century, located in the 9th course of the Red Hat in Bordeaux. This monument, inscribed in historical monuments since October 8, 1935, illustrates bourgeois residential architecture of the Louis XVI period. Its style reflects the opulence of families enriched by transatlantic trade, including slave trade and colonial trade.
The building was built in Louis Island for the Baour family, Protestant and native of Castres, who had built his fortune in armaments, colonial trade and slave trade. In 1776 the brothers Pierre and Louis Baur acquired two plots in this island and probably entrusted the design of the plans to the local architects Laclotte. This project is part of the growing urbanization of Bordeaux, then major port of the Atlantic trade.
Only the façade, including the doors and their ironworks, as well as the roof, have enjoyed heritage protection since 1935. Today, the Baur hotel belongs to a private company, and its current use (visits, rentals, etc.) is not specified in the available sources. Its history remains closely linked to that of Bordeaux enrichment in the Enlightenment century, marked by colonial exploitation and slavery.
