Origin and history

The Hotel Bénigne Le Compasseur, located 66 rue Vannerie in Dijon, is a private hotel dating back to the Middle Ages, but the current structure dates mainly from the 3rd quarter of the 16th century. Its façade, classified as historical monuments since 1910, bears witness to the architectural transformations of the Renaissance. In 1576 the building belonged to Benigne Le Compasseur, lord of Jancigny and guardian of the Mint of the king in Dijon. His son, Claude Bénigne Le Compasseur, master of accounts then Treasurer General of France, partially rebuilt the hotel, including the lodge and the three Renaissance bays of the facade.

The architectural modifications of the hotel are attributed to renowned architects of the time, such as Hugues Brouhée, known for the facade of the Parliament of Burgundy, or Nicolas Ribonnier, Langarian architect. The original pedestrian door, with its oculus and pediment, was moved and climbed up to the façade of the former François de Sales school, rue du Lycée, near the chapel. This detail illustrates the re-use practices of architectural elements at this time.

The hotel is now owned by the municipality of Dijon and is located in the preserved area of the city. Its classification in 1910 underscores its heritage importance, both for its Renaissance style and for its history linked to influential local figures.
