Staircase decorated with gypseries (Case AE 288): inscription by order of 16 November 1949
Origin and history
The hotel located at 4 (now 6) rue Clemenceau in Aix-en-Provence is a mansion built in the seventeenth century. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of this period in the Provençal region, marked by the emergence of urban residences for the aristocracy and the local bourgeoisie. Its staircase adorned with gypseries, typical of Provencal Baroque style, is a remarkable architectural element that justified its partial inscription as historical monuments.
The building was partially protected by an order of 16 November 1949, specifically concerning its decorated staircase (cadastre AE 288). This protection reflects the heritage importance of this element, representative of the artisanal know-how of the time. The exact location of the monument evolved with the administrative revisions, going from 4 to 6 rue Clemenceau, in the department of Bouches-du-Rhône (code Insee 13001).
Aix-en-Provence, the historic city of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, had many private hotels at that time, symbols of the social and economic prestige of their owners. These urban residences served both as places of life and representation, often incorporating sumptuous decorations such as gypseries. Their preservation now allows us to understand the architectural and social evolution of the region in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
