Origin and history

The Bühler Hotel, located in Béziers, Herault, is a private hotel built in the 1st quarter of the 20th century (1903) for Traugott Bühler, a rich industrialist who built his fortune in the wine and spirits trade. Signed by architects Léopold and Louis Carlier, the building has an aesthetic still marked by the 19th century, combining classicism and eclecticism. The original set consisted of a main body on Saint-Saëns Avenue, surrounded by two parks (one small and one large), as well as a secondary building at the corner of Bühler Street. The southern facade, decorated with classic bays and bas-reliefs, is surmounted by a dome with four sides. The interior preserves a monumental staircase on curved flights, murals, original fireplaces and parquet floors, testifying to the bourgeois fascist of the era.

The honorary entrance, accessible by a porch protected porch, highlights the prestige of the house. Inside, the stairwell, painted on the walls and ceiling, leads to the upper floors via two symmetrical flights. The rooms preserved their original decorations, including fireplaces, woodwork and painted ceilings, reflecting the taste for total art characteristic of the aristocratic and bourgeois residences of the early twentieth century. Partially ranked at the Historical Monuments in 1984 (facade and entrance gate), the hotel embodies the economic golden age of Béziers, linked to the wine industry, and the know-how of Carlier architects, active in the region.

The Bühler Hotel is part of an expanding urban environment where industrial fortunes financed ostentatious homes. Its architecture, although built in the 20th century, perpetuates the codes of the 19th century, with loans to neoclassicism and eclecticism. The presence of a dome, sculptures and painted decorations reveals a desire to compete with Parisian hotels, while adapting to local materials and artisans. Today, the building remains a major testimony of the Bezier heritage, linked to the economic and social history of Occitanie.
