Origin and history

The Hotel Chartraire de Montigny, located at 39 rue Vannerie in Dijon, is a mansion built around 1670 by Gagne de Perrigny. This monument represents a rare example of rock architecture in Dijon, especially visible on its portal adorned with a bold shell and vegetal motifs carved by Claude Saint-Père. These decorative elements, combined with ground vantals, reflect the artistic influence of the period, mixing exuberance and elegance.

In 1740, the hotel was acquired by Marc-Antoine Chartraire de Montigny, Treasurer General of the states of Burgundy, who undertook major renovations between 1744 and 1750. His son, Antoine Chartraire de Montigny, later added a neoclassical staircase designed by architects Jean-Antoine Caristie, Jacques Cellier and Nicolas Lenoir. This staircase, with woodwork attributed to Jérôme Marlet and a trompe-l'oeil ceiling, marks the evolution of tastes towards a more sober and geometric style.

The hotel has a turbulent history during the French Revolution. Antoine Chartraire de Montigny, mayor of Dijon in 1790-1791, was jailed twice for charges related to his financial management. Released in 1795, he died shortly afterwards, and the hotel was sold separately from his neighbour in 1792. General Bonaparte stopped there in 1800, before the building became a private school in the 19th century, under the leadership of Abbé Christian de Bretenières.

In the 20th century, the hotel was acquired by the State in 1971 to install the services of the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC). Restoration work, especially on the large staircase, was carried out in 1979 to adapt the premises to their new administrative function. Ranked a historic monument in 1995, the hotel preserves remarkable elements, such as the courtyard and the portico on Diderot Street.

The architecture of the Hotel Chartraire de Montigny bears witness to the stylistic transitions between rock and neoclassicism, while embodying the political and social history of Dijon. Its portal, monumental staircase and interior decorations are a significant example of the Burgundy heritage of the 17th and 18th centuries.
