Origin and history

The hotel of Aiguines, also known as the hotel of Eguines, is an iconic 18th century mansion located at 28 rue Jacques-de-la-Roque, in the historic heart of Aix-en-Provence. This neighborhood, the village Saint-Sauveur, developed around the cathedral and concentrates many old buildings. The hotel is distinguished by its neoclassical facade, completed in 1786, and its architectural elements typical of the Louis XVI period, such as ironwork or monumental columns of the vestibule.

Built by the Gautier family, Barons of Aiguines and Senez, the hotel reflects the prestige of this Provencal aristocratic line. Its architecture combines elegance and functionality, with a cochère door, a balcony with consoles adorned with acanthe foliage, and a remarkable interior staircase. These characteristics make it a major testimony of the Aix urbanism of the Enlightenment century.

The Aiguines hotel has been protected under the Historic Monuments since 21 December 1984. This protection covers both its facades, its wrought iron staircase, and several interior rooms with preserved decorations, such as living rooms or boudoir. These elements highlight the heritage importance of the site, both for its family history and its architectural style.

The location of the hotel, between rue Jacques-de-la-Roque and rue des Menudières, makes it a point of interest in the route of the Aixian monuments. Its ranking is part of a desire to preserve the civil heritage of Provence-Alpes-Côte d的Azur, a region marked by a rich urban and aristocratic history.

Architectural details, such as the Aleppo breach or the white marble cartridges, illustrate the luxury and craftsmanship of the time. These materials, combined with the square structure of the building, reveal an aesthetic and practical design, adapted to the way of life of the 18th century Provencal elites.
