Origin and history

The hotel of Albret is a former mansion located in the heart of Fontainebleau, in Île-de-France, at nos 15-17 Place d'Armes. Partly listed as historical monuments since 1931, it is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site with the Fontainebleau Palace and Park since 1981. Its facades and gate, protected, bear witness to an architecture redesigned over the centuries, especially after a major restoration in the late nineteenth century.

The building has a history linked to the French crown: bought by Henry IV, he joined the royal estate before welcoming the Cardinal of Richelieu in 1642, seduced by his view of the castle gardens. In the 19th century, its owner M. de Bacourt, Minister Plenipotentiary, placed on it a commemorative plaque mentioning the dates "1471-1894", although this exact period is not documented in the sources. Today, there remains a testimony of Fontainebleau's historic urban planning, between private heritage and royal memory.

The protected elements are limited to the facades of the entrance pavilions and the gate, inscribed by order of 7 October 1931. The building, still in private ownership, illustrates the architectural transformations and successive uses of a private hotel, from modern times to contemporary times. Its location, close to the castle, highlights its importance in the city's urban and historical landscape.
