Origin and history
The Hotel d'Autane is an emblematic building of the old town of Forcalquier, located on Rue Grande (or Grande-Rue). This building, whose origins date back to the 14th and 16th centuries, illustrates the medieval and reborn civil architecture of the region. Its designation as historic monuments in 1988 reflects its heritage value, particularly for its facades, roofs, inner courtyard and spiral staircase, protected by decree.
The precise location of the hotel is documented in the Mérimée base under the address Grande-Rue 10 or 8 Rue Grande, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department (code Insee 04088). The monument, although partially open to contemporary uses (visits, events), preserves major architectural elements such as its spiral staircase, typical of the mansions of this time. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as satisfactory a priori (level 6/10) according to available sources.
Forcalquier, a medieval town of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, was an important administrative and commercial centre in the Middle Ages. Private hotels such as that of Autane reflected the social status of their owners, often local notables or families linked to the comtal or ecclesiastical power. These urban residences served as both a place of life, a place of representation, and sometimes a place of business management, in a region marked by exchanges between Provence and the Alps.
