Origin and history

The Hotel d'Egremont is a house built in the early 16th century by Nicolas de La Fontaine, provost lieutenant of Marville for the Barrois, and lord of Choppey and Pouilly. This building illustrates Renaissance civil architecture in this border region between Lorraine and Champagne, reflecting the social status of its sponsor, a member of the local nobility linked to the seigneurial administration.

In the 17th century, the hotel was enlarged, and an operating building carried an armored stone dating from 1605, now preserved in the church of Marville. A carriageway door, marked with the date of 1731, bears witness to the subsequent changes. In the 19th century, holes partially altered the original structure. These successive changes reveal the adaptation of the building to the residential and agricultural needs of the following periods.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1931 for its Renaissance facades and roofs, the hotel is fully registered in 2024, including its outbuildings, courtyards, garden and fence walls. This late ranking underscores the desire to preserve an architectural ensemble representative of the evolution of a noble residence over more than five centuries, in a village marked by its medieval and modern history.

The hotel's location at 13 Grand Street (formerly Rue des Tripots), in the centre of Marville, confirms its central role in the urban fabric. The commune, attached to the department of Meuse and the district of Bar-le-Duc, thus retains a heritage linked to the former province of Barrois, which is now integrated into the Grand East region.
