Origin and history
The hotel of Estissac, located in Niort, is one of the few Renaissance buildings preserved in the city. Built in the 16th century, it stands out for its adorned facade, including an entrance door framed by carved pilasters and surmounted by a decorated skylight. A corbelled scald, also designed, completes the architectural ensemble. These elements reflect the influence of French Renaissance styles, adapted to an urban home.
Inside, the hotel maintains a staircase of type Henry II, characterized by its straight flights and its deciphered walls. The ceilings, composed of carved stone caissons, bear witness to the care given to the decoration. The architect Lionel de la Réau, mentioned as a masterpiece, left a marked stylistic imprint, especially in ornamental details. The building, inscribed in the Historic Monuments in 1939, illustrates Niort's civil heritage and its architectural evolution.
The hotel's location at 3 rue du Petit-Saint-Jean places the monument in the historic centre of Niort, in the Deux-Sèvres department. Although geographical accuracy is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10), the building remains a landmark for the study of Renaissance architecture in New Aquitaine. Its state of conservation and its protected elements (fall, staircase, ceilings) make it a subject of interest to historians and heritage lovers.
