Origin and history
The hotel of Osmont is a private hotel built between 1748 and 1749 in the Montorgueil district of Paris. He was commissioned by Jean Jacques Osmont, squire and secretary of the king's council near the Parliament of Flanders, and reflected the social status of his owner, who also owned many report houses in the area. The architecture of the period, marked by the refinement of facades and interiors, is represented there, notably through its inside staircase, today protected.
When he died in 1770, Jean Jacques Osmont bequeathed the hotel to his nephew, Marc Juvénal Osmont, an influential official and financial officer. The latter, a lawyer at the Paris Parliament and President Treasurer of France, embodied the continuity of a lineage linked to the management of royal finances and prestigious administrative charges. The hotel remained in the Osmont family, testifying to their social ascent and their attachment to the 18th-century Parisian elite.
The hotel's facades, roofs and staircases were listed as historic monuments in 1996, recognizing their heritage value. This protection highlights the importance of this building in the Parisian architectural landscape, as well as its role in the history of private hotels, symbols of power and prestige under the Ancien Régime.
