Origin and history

The Damian de Vinsargues hotel, located in Arles in the popular area of La Roquette, is an example of a 17th century mansion. This area, marked by the trades related to river and sea navigation, housed a social mix with hotels such as those of Roure or Antonelle. The hotel's U-shaped architecture around a courtyard reflects this time with carved lampbrequins typical of Arles buildings.

Originally from Châteaurenard, the Damian de Vinsargues, anoblis in 1460 and confirmed noble in 1667, were part of the family of the first president of the Parliament of Provence. In 1725 Anne d'Antonelle, the widow of Jean Damian de Vinsargues, sold the hotel to the councillor of L'Estang-Parade, who sold it to Judge Laville in 1726. The hotel was listed for historical monuments in 1932.

The facade of the hotel is distinguished by a classic door decorated with an interrupted pediment and a niche housing the coat of arms of the Damian de Vinsargues, accompanied by their motto Altior astris ("Higher than the star"). The lamprequins, carved under the windows, evoke the fabrics deployed during the holidays, a peculiar feature of the Arlesian domestic architecture of this period.

Today, the hotel is owned by the municipality of Arles. Its inscription in the historic monuments in 1932 specifically protects the lower part of its facade, testifying to its heritage importance in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.
