Origin and history

The Dareau Hotel, located in Saulieu in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a historic monument built in 1773. It illustrates civil architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries, with a main house body, outbuildings ( stables, bread oven, barn, workshop) and a well. Its spatial organization, including courtyard, garden, vegetable garden and orchard, reflects the domestic and aesthetic uses of the era. The original volumes, preserved, bear witness to the constructive and functional rigour of provincial bourgeois houses.

The hotel is distinguished by an exceptional interior decoration, including wallpapers dated from the late eighteenth century (ground floor) and the nineteenth century (first floor). Among the remarkable pieces are a Chinese salon and a bedroom, decorated with high quality designs and techniques. These elements highlight the rapid spread of Parisian decorative trends in a city like Saulieu, far from the major urban centres. The monument, partially protected since 2016, offers a rare testimony to the evolution of the tastes and lifestyles of local elites.

The location of the hotel at 18 Danton Street is documented in the Mérimée base, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10). The house body, registered in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 22 July 2016, constitutes the protected element of the site. No information is available on its current accessibility (visits, rental, accommodation), or on any historic owners or occupants other than the name "Dareau", associated with the name of the hotel.
