Origin and history
The Dauphin de Montrodeix is a Louis XVI-style mansion built in the first half of the 18th century in Clermont-Ferrand. This monument has retained its original exterior elements, including its classic bossed gate and garden façade, consisting of a central pediment body and two lateral wings. These architectural features are a remarkable example of the aristocratic urban planning of the time in the region.
At the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the interior of the hotel underwent major changes to adapt to the bourgeois uses of the time. The interior distribution was divided into two parts: the East Wing was transformed into ratio apartments served by a common stairwell, while the West Wing retained its use as a private hotel with a private staircase. The six pieces of the first floor were redecorated in an eclectic style, mixing neo-Renaissance and neo-Louis XVI elements, reflecting the tastes of the rising bourgeoisie.
The Dauphin Hotel in Montrodeix is now classified as a Historical Monument, with a protection covering the entire building, including the garden and interiors (hall entrance, staircase with a statue of Jeanne d'Arc, as well as the private rooms and their decorations: fireplaces, woodwork and paintings). This inscription, effective since March 20, 2006, highlights its heritage importance as one of the most significant private homes in the centre of Clermont-Ferrand for the 18th and 19th centuries.
