Origin and history
The Hotel de Barrême, located 11 rue de Barrême in Arles, is a large private hotel built in the first half of the seventeenth century. Its sober and majestic architecture reflects the style of the large Arlesian mansions of the time, with carved lamprequins and characteristic corner links. It has been a historic monument since October 13, 1988.
The building was commissioned by François de Rebattu (1587-1662), adviser to the King and scholar, who in 1646 obtained permission to demolish a previous house to build this hotel. Renobli in 1653, Rebattu gathered manuscripts now kept at the Méjanes d'Aix-en-Provence library and at the Arsenal in Paris.
The hotel then passed to the family of Barrême, several of whom held judicial and military posts. Jean de Barrême, judge at Tarascon and captain, was notably an adviser to Queen Marguerite de Valois. The architecture, with its lamprequin windows and its modillon cornice, illustrates the prestige of the Arlesian aristocracy of the seventeenth century.
