Origin and history

The Bataille hotel is a private hotel located in Castelnaudary, in the department of Aude, in Occitanie region. Built during the second half of the 18th century, it illustrates the civil architectural style of this period, marked by symmetrical facades and decorative elements inspired by the Louis XV style. The building is distinguished by its rectangular plan, its floor on ground floor, and a main façade with nine bays per level. The entrance door, framed with pilasters and surmounted by a shell console, as well as the wrought iron staircase ramp with patterns of lobed leaves and volutes, testify to a refined craftsmanship.

The hotel has been listed as historic monuments since 1948, a recognition that protects its exterior facades, roofs, door and stair ramp. In 1834, the premises were occupied by Martin Dauch, descendant of a third-state deputy known for his opposition to the oath of the Jeu de Paume in 1789. Although this filiation is attested, there is no record that the MP himself resided there in 1789. The interior staircase, serving only the first floor, develops into three flights and incorporates a service staircase. The ramp, composed of long wrought iron panels, has symmetrical motifs around a central shield that today has no coats of arms.

The building is located Place des Cordeliers in Castelnaudary, although some sources mention an approximate address at 5 rue de la Terrasse. This disparity reflects uncertainties related to the accuracy of historical geographic data. The hotel of Bataille, by its architecture and history, offers a light on the life of the local elites under the Old Regime and the Revolution, as well as on the urban evolution of Castelnaudary, a city marked by its role in trade and regional administration.
