Origin and history

The hotel of Beauffremont, originally named hotel of Orrouer, is built from 1732 in Paris, at 87 rue de Grenelle, on order of Paul de Grivel de Grossouvre, Count of Orrouer. Architects Pierre Boscry, probably assisted by his father Charles, draw up the plans. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, with a relaxed facade between courtyard and garden, and a rare curvilinear pediment for the period. Its interior decorations, including the seven salons decorated by sculptor Nicolas Pineau, reflect the fascist of the Parisian aristocracy.

From 1742 to 1745, the hotel housed the Austrian embassy for the first time, before passing into the hands of noble families: the Boisgelin de Cucé, the Montmorency, and the Bauffremont-Courtenay. In 1850, he again welcomed the Austrian embassy, with Prince Metternich as a resident between 1859 and 1861. The building, classified as a Historical Monument in 1926 for its facades and decorations, also has private uses, such as art collections under Luiz Bemberg in the 1930s.

In the 20th century, the hotel became the property of the designer Hubert de Givenchy (1986–2018), who exhibited his collection of works of art. Sold in 2019 to billionaire Xavier Niel, the house remains closed to the public. Its monumental portal with ionic columns, its commons ( stables, kitchens) and its honorary staircase testify to its past prestige. The woodwork, protected after a legal dispute in the 1960s, and the veranda added in the 19th century complete its architectural history.

The hotel of Beauffremont is also distinguished by its location, next to the hotel of Avaray (ownership of the Netherlands) and close to the hotel of Matignon. Its inscription in the Historical Monuments covers all the facades (street, courtyard, garden) and the decorations of the living rooms on the ground floor and the first floor, highlighting its heritage importance.
