Origin and history
The Boades Hotel, also known as the Boadès Hotel, is a private hotel built during the first half of the seventeenth century in Aix-en-Provence. Located in No. 8 of Place Jeanne d'Arc, it embodies the aristocratic architecture of the city under the Old Regime. Its central location reflects the importance of private hotels in the urban landscape of Aix, often linked to the local elite.
In 1935, Blanche d'Estienne de Saint John bequeathed the hotel to the city of Aix-en-Provence, on condition that his income was donated to the Academy of Sciences, Agriculture, Arts and Fine Letters in Aix. This donation is accompanied by an agreement between the municipality and the Academy, formalizing a sustainable cultural and financial partnership. The hotel became a symbol of local patronage in the 20th century.
The entire building is registered as historical monuments by order of 23 April 1947. This protection recognizes its heritage value, both for its architecture and its role in the social and cultural history of Aix-en-Provence. Today, there remains a testimony of the architectural and intellectual heritage of the region.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm its exact address (place Jeanne-d'Arc) and its membership in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. The Insee code of the municipality (13001) and its attachment to the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region complete the administrative data. No information is provided on its current accessibility or contemporary uses.
