Origin and history

The Bourbon-Condé hotel is a Parisian mansion built between 1781 and 1782 by the architect Brongniart for Louis V Joseph de Bourbon-Condé, 8th prince of Condé. To his daughter, Louise Adelaide de Bourbon (abbess of Remiremont and then of the Temple), he later became the seat of a Benedictine religious community founded in 1816. The bas-reliefs of Clodion, once adorning the facade, are now scattered between the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum and the palace of the Dukes of Lorraine in Nancy.

In 1847, the hotel was acquired by the Congregation of Mekhitarist Fathers, which established the Armenian College Samuel Moorat (1846-1870). After its closure, part of the building serves as a dwelling, while another accommodates students under the direction of Father Apraham Djarian. Sold in 1880 to Count Chambrun, it passed in the 20th century to the Sisters of the Heart of Mary, who opened there the Institut Rue Monsieur, a private school closed in the 2000s.

Ranked a historic monument in 1939 (with outbuildings and garden), the hotel is sold in 2008 for 78 million euros to the royal family of Bahrain. Renovations include a cinema and parking. A History of Paris sign today signals its prestigious past in front of 12 rue Monsieur.

The sources mention a period of revised construction (4th quarter of the 18th century according to Monumentum), as well as a precise location: 12 rue Monsieur, 75007 Paris, in a district marked by the aristocracy then religious and educational institutions. The architecture and interior decorations, although partially modified, bear witness to its princely origin.
