Origin and history

The Hotel de Bourgogne, located in Clermont-Ferrand, is an emblematic monument of the 20th century, built between 1928 and 1930 in the railway station district. Its bold architecture, signed by the architect Alberic Aubert, uses a reinforced concrete frame to overcome the constraints of a small triangular plot. The facades, marked by vertical lines and Art Deco decorations, incorporate stylized bas-reliefs of Gournier and geometric ironwork, while a marquise with glass cabochons highlights the entrance. This structural choice allows thin masonries and corbellations on the street, creating a slender and modern silhouette.

The tip of the building, treated as a blind gable, forms a striking bow at the corner of two streets in gradient. This aesthetic and technical bias reflects the innovation of the time, where reinforced concrete liberates architectural forms. The hotel occupies a strategic location, both very visible and forced, revealing the early talent of Aubert, shortly before his major work, the sabourin sanatorium. The elements protected since 2021 include facades, roofs, as well as the stairwell and its elevator, which bear witness to this period of tradition and modernity.

Ranked a Historic Monument, the Hotel de Bourgogne embodies creative adaptation to the urban challenges of the 1930s. Its recent inscription (2021) highlights the recognition of its Art Deco heritage, combining functionality and geometric ornaments. The official address, 31 avenue Charras, anchored in the Puy-de-Dôme, makes it a major architectural landmark of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, despite a GPS location deemed mediocre (note 5/10).
