Origin and history
The Hotel de Brocques is a private hotel built in 1740 for Thomas Brocques, a member of a Havre family attested in 1530 with Raoulin Brocques, one of the first house owners in the city. This building, located at 13 rue de la Crique, embodies the influence of local traders and houses in 1817 the creation of the first circle of merchants in Le Havre, called "the reading salon". Its history thus reflects the economic and cultural dynamism of the port city.
During the Second World War, in 1945, nearby German prisoners used the node panels of the reign of Louis XV and the Hungarian flooring as firewood, causing irreversible damage. Despite these losses, the interior staircase and part of the structure are preserved. The hotel is classified as a historical monument by decree of 9 December 1946, recognizing its heritage value.
After 1946, the hotel was built and divided into six units. Although the interior panels have disappeared and the porch has been stripped of its original wrought iron grid, the building retains significant architectural elements. Its ranking today protects this testimony of the urban and social history of Le Havre, marked by the hazards of conflicts and modern transformations.
