Origin and history

The Hotel de Champagney is a mansion built in the 16th century (1565) in Besançon, in the Battant district, on the site of a medieval house whose wall still remains. Sponsored by Jacques Bonvalot, Lord of Champagney, he illustrates Renaissance architecture with its sling windows, arms and gargoyles. This monument reflects the prestige of its sponsor, a member of the local aristocracy, and the artistic renewal of the period.

The facades and roofs of the hotel, as well as those of the adjoining pavilion, have been protected as historical monuments since 18 October 1966. Their inscription underscores the heritage value of the building, a witness to the bisontin urbanism of the Renaissance. The hotel is distinguished by its Renaissance style, visible especially on the street façade, where sculpted details (accolades, gargoyles) remind the influence of Italian models in Franche-Comté.

Located at 37 Battant Street, the hotel is located in a historic area of Besançon, marked by its medieval past and its development in modern times. Although owned by the municipality today, its current use (visits, rentals) is not specified in the sources. Its architecture and history make it a remarkable example of the region's civilian heritage.
