Origin and history

The Hotel de Claris, located in Montpellier, is a mansion built between the 18th and 19th centuries. It was originally acquired by the noble Antoine de Claris, a councillor at the Cour des Aides, who bought a large building between Rue Saint-Guilhem and two public streets. The latter were incorporated into the property after having been infused, allowing the development of courses and buildings. The original urban configuration was thus profoundly modified to create a coherent whole, reflecting the social status of its owner.

After the French Revolution, the street façade was demolished in 1863 to expand the public road and then rebuilt back. This new façade preserves re-used ancient elements such as garlands, masks and palmettes, as well as a cornice decorated with carved heads. The central entrance leads to a vaulted passage, a vestibule and a large courtyard. To the right of the vestibule, a remarkable staircase is distinguished by its neat entrance: two canned columns support an arch in basket handle, while the wrought iron ramp alternates straight and wavy patterns on floors.

The hotel has been partially protected under the Historical Monuments since 1965, with an inscription covering the courtyard facades, the vestibule and the stairway. Its official address, 34 rue Saint-Guilhem, places the monument in the historic heart of Montpellier, although GPS coordinates suggest a location close to rue de l'Amandier. The accuracy of this location is estimated to be fair, possibly reflecting subsequent urban changes.

Architectural elements, such as the straight and rounded silts of the staircase or the narrow paneled balusters, illustrate the evolution of styles between the two centuries of construction. The wrought iron railing, particularly worked out, bears witness to the craftsmanship of the time. Although the hotel is not explicitly open to the public, its conservation and ornamental details make it a notable example of the Montpellieran heritage.

The historical context of the Hotel de Claris is part of that of a city in the midst of urban transformation, where local aristocracy, like Antoine de Claris, shaped space according to its needs. The Revolution and 19th-century developments, such as the widening of the streets, then redesigned Montpellier's face, sometimes at the expense of historical facades. Today, the hotel embodies this stratification of times, between noble heritage and modern adaptations.
