Origin and history

The Hôtel de Florainville, located in Place Saint-Pierre in Bar-le-Duc in the department of Meuse, is an emblematic building built in the 17th century for the Florainville family. Its stone facade of Savonnières, typical of the hotels of the square, is organized on three floors with distinct styles, with wrought iron balconies and a roof of slates with four sides. The interior houses a double-revolution staircase leading to sill windows on the ground floor and curved windows under the attic.

In 1794, the building became the seat of the municipality of Bar-le-Duc, then hosted a museum before becoming a court of grand instance, then in the Court of Assises of the department. His history was marked by the reception of the future Queen Marie-Antoinette in 1770 on her journey to Versailles. The hotel preserves remarkable elements such as coats of arms (duc de Bar, town of Bar-le-Duc) and the currency GESTA SONNANT, as well as a moral inscription dated 1640 on its facade rue Cim.

Partially classified as historical monuments (roofs, facades, fireplaces and a stained glass window of the Maréchal master glass), the Hotel de Florainville illustrates the architectural and institutional evolution of Bar-le-Duc. Its successive protections (1988 and 1992) highlight the heritage value of its interior and exterior decorations, including a fireplace of the large courtroom and characteristic ironworks.

The building, owned by the commune, today embodies the judiciary while at the same time testifying to the past prestige of the local nobility and the urban transformations of the city, from the Old Regime to the contemporary era.
