Origin and history
The Hôtel de Fourques is a mansion of the first half of the eighteenth century, located at the 25 Grand'Rue Jean-Moulin in Montpellier. This monument is distinguished by its quadrilateral structure around an inner courtyard, with a facade on a street adorned with a false porch on the ground floor, marked by splits and surmounted by an imposing cornice. Five arches include the ground floor and the basement, while the central door, doric style, access structure. The two upper floors, pierced by seven regular bays, are crowned by a sculpted shell and a triangular pediment, giving the ensemble a classic elegance.
Acquired in 1720 by François Lamouroux, treasurer of the extraordinary wars, the hotel underwent a major transformation campaign from 1725, when the facade was realigned to give it its present appearance. The 18th century works include the restructuring of floors and the addition of decorative elements such as carved frieze. In the 19th century, major renovations partially altered the interior, including the replacement of the staircase. The façade, classified as Historical Monument by decree of 25 September 1942, today bears witness to this Montpellieran architectural heritage.
The history of the Hôtel de Fourques reflects the urban and social changes of Montpellier in the Enlightenment century. Originally owned by Charles Moynier de Fourques, his transformation by Lamouroux illustrates the rise of the merchant and administrative bourgeoisie, anxious to display its prestige through sumptuous urban residences. The realignment of 1725 coincided with a period of modernization of the city, where classical architecture became a marker of distinction for local elites.
