Origin and history

The Hotel de Jarnac is a private hotel built in 1784 by architect Étienne-François Legrand for Léonard Chapelle, then rented to Marie-Charles-Rosalie de Rohan-Chabot, Count of Jarnac. This building, emblematic of the neo-classical style, is distinguished by its facade on courtyard adorned with an ionic peristyle and its attic, while the facade on garden features three ionic half-columns supporting a curved pediment. Inside, the large living room is rhythmized by half-columns and allegories of the Four Elements, reflecting a neat decorative art.

Over the centuries, the hotel has changed hands among the Parisian elite. In 1828 the Earl of Villèle, the former president of the Council, settled there. In 1834 he was acquired by surgeon Guillaume Dupuytren, who died there the following year. His daughter, Adelaide, Countess of Beaumont, sold him in 1847 to Prince Pierre Soltykoff, before he passed to the Duchess of Valençay, Alix de Montmorency, separated from his husband, the Duke of Talleyrand. After his death in 1858, the hotel houses various owners, including Georges Menier from 1934.

Ranked a historic monument in 1939 for its architecture and history, the Jarnac hotel also belonged to the Menier and Primat families. In 2022, it was bought by Ukrainian billionaire Kostyantin Zhevago for 35.5 million euros. Its pure neoclassical style, its interior decorations and its garden make it a remarkable testimony to the Parisian heritage of the 18th century.
