Origin and history

The hotel of the Archdeacon is a 17th century building, built in 1635 at 3 rue Rouget-de-Lisle in Narbonne, Aude. He owes his name to his first owner, Archdeacon Arnaud de Cazalets, a member of a dynasty that owned the site for a century and a half. The building was enlarged by the annexation of a nearby house shortly after its construction, preserving architectural elements such as a turret, a staircase and remarkable interior decorations.

Ranked as a historic monument on September 7, 2001, the hotel is distinguished by its gypsums, its exposed ceiling, and a covered living room with a French ceiling decorated with paintings. The first building, restructured in the 19th century, retains traces of large divided living rooms, while the second body has a neoclassical 18th century porch. The ensemble reflects the architectural evolution and social history of Narbonne.

Property of the Cazalets until the mid-18th century, the hotel illustrates the role of archdeacons in the region. Its classification protects elements such as turret, stairway and interior decorations, testifying to its heritage importance. Today, there remains a significant example of 17th-century civil architecture in Occitanie.
