Origin and history

The Hotel de l'Épine, located in Pézenas in Occitanie, is a historical monument whose construction spans between the 17th and 18th centuries. Its main facade, composed of six spans, is distinguished by an exceptional sculpted decoration: staples of bays adorned with crowns, flower necklaces, ivy or laurel leaves, and a central guardrail above the entrance door, marked by concentric curves of rare elegance. The wrought iron balconies and cabochons, as well as the stone door, were protected by arrest in 1933, highlighting the artistic value of the building.

Inside, the staircase preserves vestiges of gypsum, including ancient busts placed on shell-shaped bases. This refined decor reflects the influence of classical and baroque arts, typical of the aristocratic homes of the time. The hotel probably owes its construction to Félix de Grave de Maussac, owner in the middle of the eighteenth century, before passing in 1792 to his granddaughter Félicité, then being transferred in 1803 to the merchant Jean-Baptiste Bouisset. Three years later, the house was acquired by Marie-Augustin L'Épine, son of the organ builder Jean-François l'Épine, who had settled in Pézenas after having built the organ of the collegiate Saint John in 1757. The Lepine family will occupy the area until 1914, marking the long-term history of the building.

The exact address of the hotel, 9 rue Victor-Hugo, is referenced in the Merimée base under the code Insee 34199, in the department of Herault. Although the accuracy of its location is considered mediocre (note of 5/10), the monument remains an emblematic example of Languedoc civil architecture, combining exceptional crafts and family history. The protected elements, such as the façade and its balconies, illustrate the know-how of the local artisans in sculpture and ironwork, characteristic of the particular hotels of the region at that time.
