Origin and history
The Pertuis Charity Hotel is a historic monument built in the early eighteenth century, between 1701 and the first quarter of this century. Founded in 1701 by a prominent local, it was originally intended to serve as a charitable institution for the pertuisian population. The building consists of a chapel with a regular plan, structured into a central vessel of three spans flanked by two side chapels, all vaulted with ridges. A sacristy surmounted by a rostrum occupies the northeast corner, while the interior elevations are rhythmized by pilasters and arcades in the middle.
The south façade, ordered, overlooks a two-storey rectangular building, served by a ramp staircase. The front door, framed by a crosstower, is surmounted by an armored bas-relief representing a log. The architectural complex, including the chapel and the east building, was transformed into a school and expanded in 1904. Today, some elements, such as the chapel, the entrance gate, the facades, the roofs and the vestibule, have been protected under the Historic Monuments since 1984.
The building illustrates the religious and charitable architecture of the early eighteenth century in Provence, marked by a rigorous spatial organization and sober yet elegant decorations. Its evolution, from charity to school, reflects the social and urban changes of Pertuis over the centuries. The location of the Hôtel de la Charité, at 253 rue Giraud, makes it a central part of the historic heritage of the city, today owned by the municipality.
