Facades and roofs (case AB 86): inscription by order of 1 March 1928
Origin and history
The Hotel de la Licorne, also known as the Hotel de la Licorne, is an emblematic monument to Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy. Built in the 15th century, it embodies the medieval civil architecture of this period, marked by the reception of pilgrims and travelers on this major religious site. Its location, at the corner of the Grande Rue and an adjacent venom, reflects the dense and functional town planning of the Abbey.
The facades and roofs of the Hotel de la Unicorn were listed as historical monuments by order of 1 March 1928. This protection highlights their heritage value, typical of medieval buildings preserved at Mont-Saint-Michel. The building is also associated with the Artichoke House, an old outbuilding mentioned in the sources, suggesting a wider architectural ensemble.
Mont-Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracted pilgrims to the 15th century to venerate the archangel of Saint Michael. Hotels like Unicorn played a key role in the accommodation and catering of these visitors, while participating in the local economy. Their architecture, often modest but robust, was adapted to the climatic and topographical constraints of this isolated rock.
Today, the Hotel de la Unicorn remains a testimony of this medieval past, although its contemporary uses (visit, rental, accommodation) are not specified in the available sources. Its exact location, at 9076 Grande Rue la Coquille, confirms its integration into the historical fabric of the municipality, marked by the code Insee 50353 (Department of the Channel).
