Origin and history
The Hotel de La Marcardière, now partially disappeared, was a private hotel whose entrance gate, inspired by ancient architecture, was the most remarkable element. This portal, adorned with twin ionic columns and a engulfed sculpture, illustrates the adoption of antiquisant vocabulary in 18th-century civil architecture. It served as a solemn access to a courtyard garden, highlighting the prestige of the original home.
The site also retains a narrow pavilion dated 1878, as well as a house built in the second half of the 19th century. These subsequent additions reflect a continuing, though transformed, occupation of the site. The gate, fence walls and the 1878 Pavilion were protected by a historic monument registration in 2002, recognizing their heritage value.
The historic address of the hotel, located at 13 rue Jean-Jacques-Rousseau in Niort (Deux-Sèvres), places the monument in an urban context marked by the architectural evolution between the Ancient Regime and the industrial era. Code Insee 79191 confirms its anchoring in the Deux-Sèvres department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, formerly Poitou-Charentes.
The current location, although specified by GPS coordinates, remains approximate (level 5/10 according to the Merimée base), perhaps reflecting the transformations of the surrounding structure. No information is available on opening up to the public, a possible tourist vocation or related services (visits, accommodation).
