Origin and history
The Hotel de la Monnaie de Tours is an iconic monument located in the historical district of the Old Towers, on 5-7 rue de la Monnaie. Its origin dates back to at least the second half of the 16th century, when a first currency hotel already occupied this location. However, the main building visible today was rebuilt shortly before 1734, marking an important phase of its architectural evolution. This site was dedicated to the minting of money, a major economic and strategic activity under the Old Regime.
In 1772, the suppression of the Towers currency led to the sale of all the buildings to a certain Olivier Normand, putting an end to his original monetary function. In the 19th century, in 1845, the hotel housed the School of Brothers of the Christian Doctrine as well as shops, illustrating its adaptation to new uses. Between 1976 and 1978, a restoration campaign preserved its facades, roofs, as well as remarkable interior elements such as the vaulted hall on the ground floor and the staircase on the west wing. These parties were also protected by an inscription as historical monuments on 27 June 1946.
The Hotel de la Monnaie de Tours thus bears witness to centuries of history, from its initial role in monetary production to its subsequent educational and commercial functions. Its architecture, marked by the 17th and 18th centuries, makes it a representative example of the urban heritage of Tours, now highlighted in the context of the preservation of the Old Towers.
