Origin and history

The Hotel de la Monnaie de Nevers is an emblematic building located on 7 Rue des Recollets, in the historic centre of the city. Dating from the 4th quarter of the 15th century, it is traditionally identified as the old workshop where the currencies of the Counts of Nevers were struck. Although its current structure dates back to this period, older elements, such as a vaulted cellar in the middle of the 12th century, suggest an earlier occupation of the site. Its redent gable, typical of Flemish architecture, and its restored sill windows in 1992 make it a rare testimony of medieval monetary craftsmanship.

The house was inhabited at the beginning of the 15th century by Hugues de Pougues, private master of the Nevers Mint between 1420 and 1427. This character illustrates the economic and political role of the building, linked to the comtal authority. The interior, which was profoundly redesigned in the 17th and 19th centuries, nevertheless retains traces of its original use, such as the staircase and the cellar, protected since 1997 under the title of Historical Monuments. The facade on the street, with its reconstituted awning, today recalls its prestigious past.

Ranked for its architectural elements (facade, staircase, cellar), the Mint Hotel embodies both the Burgundian medieval heritage and cultural exchanges with Flanders. Its location in the historic district of Nevers, near other monuments such as the Cathedral of Saint-Cyr-et-Sainte-Julitte, makes it a marker of local heritage. The sources, including Monumentum and the Merimée base, underline its importance despite the transformations undergone over the centuries.
