Origin and history
Hotel de la Préfecture de La Réunion is a public building located in Barachois, in the city of Saint-Denis, on the island of La Réunion. Built in the 18th century, it now serves as the prefecture of the department and as an official residence for the prefect. This building is a symbol of the French administration in this overseas territory, marked by colonial architecture adapted to the tropical climate.
The facades and roofs of the Hôtel de la Préfecture were classified as historical monuments on 12 August 1970, while the interiors were inscribed on 9 February 2006. These protections make it one of the oldest classified buildings of La Réunion, as well as the Pointue Chapel of Saint Paul, classified on the same date. Its status as a historic monument underscores its historic and architectural importance to the island.
The official address of the hotel, according to the Merimée base, is 6 Rue des Messageries in Saint-Denis, in the overseas department 974. The building is owned by the department and remains a central administrative place, although information on its accessibility to the public (visits, room rental) is not specified in the available sources.
