Origin and history

The Hôtel de la Prévoté, located in Candes-Saint-Martin (Indre-et-Loire), is a building built in the 15th and 16th centuries. He played a central role in local judicial life, hosting the court presided over by one of the canons of the collegiate chapter. This provost, the king's representative, served there until the end of the 18th century. The hotel is distinguished by its tuffled architecture, with two floors illuminated by sled windows and a polygonal staircase turret.

The building is located at the corner of the streets of Saint-Maurice and Trochet, within the perimeter of the medieval town close, close to the collegiate. Its gate, accessible from rue Michelet, overlooks an inner courtyard. Although partially ruined, the building retains traces of its prestigious past, as coats of arms are now erased. It was listed as a historical monument on November 27, 1951, protecting its facades and roofs.

The Hôtel de la Prévoté illustrates the judicial and religious organization of Candes-Saint-Martin in modern times. Its tuffeau construction, typical of the region, and its two-phase design (XV and XVI centuries) reflect the architectural and political evolutions of the period. The building, though modest in its size, bears witness to the local importance of the provost, a canon with a royal authority in this small city of the Niger.

The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its partial state of conservation, with posterior elements (such as a return building) having changed its original appearance. The accuracy of its location is considered mediocre (level 5/10), but its official address remains Rue Trochet and Saint-Maurice. Today, its current use (visit, rental) is not documented in the sources consulted.
