Origin and history
The Hotel de la Sous-Prefecture de Charolles is a 17th-century building located in the department of Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. It occupies an urban hotel built between courtyard and garden, with a main body flanked by two wings in return. The courtyard façade is distinguished by its models and frames of finely carved bays, while the wings house doric pavilions. Originally, this building was the home of Claude Fricaud, deputy bailiff of Charolles in 1789, before becoming a sub-prefecture in the 19th century.
The interiors, renovated at the beginning of the 19th century, retain elements characteristic of 18th century houses: panelling, fireplaces, parquet floors and plaster ceilings. The office of the sub-prefect, located in the southern pavilion, is uniquely decorated with a French ceiling. Other ceilings of this type could remain under subsequent structures. Together, including the central body and its wings, was inscribed in historical monuments by order of 16 September 2019. The restoration of the roof, completed in 2025, preserved this heritage.
The district of Charolles, on which the sub-prefecture depends, was created by the law of 17 February 1800 (28 pluviôse an VIII), replacing the former districts of Charolles, Bourbon-Lancy and Marcigny. Today, the building remains the property of the department of Saône-et-Loire and houses the local administrative services. His official address, 28 rue de la Madeleine, is referenced in the Mérimée database under the code Insee 71106.
