Origin and history
Hotel de Lantivy is a mansion built in the 16th and 17th centuries, located at 25-26 rue Chevreul in Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne, in the department of Mayenne. This monument illustrates Renaissance civil architecture, with a rectangular plan flanked by two corner towers and a double ramp staircase. Its state of conservation is remarkable: original frame, 16th century skylights, 17th century interior carpentry and period lead stained glass still remain today.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 10 May 1988, the hotel bears witness to the heritage wealth of Château-Gontier, which has some 40 similar hotels dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The eponymous family, owner in 1662, owned two houses on this site. The building reflects the post-medieval social organization, where each level served by the staircase corresponded to a separate housing body, characteristic of the urban dwellings of the period.
Architecturally, the Hotel de Lantivy is distinguished by its structure in rectangle with towers, connected to the masonries of the main body. In the west, a building houses the monumental staircase, a central element of the interior distribution. The windows and the frame, intact since the 16th century, as well as the carpentry and stained glass of the 17th century, make it a rare example of integral conservation for this period. The monument is part of the urban landscape of Château-Gontier, marked by a dense concentration of private hotels reflecting its regional historic importance.
