Origin and history
The hotel of Lestrade, also called Lajaubertie or La Joubertie, is a private hotel located in Périgueux, in the Dordogne department (New Aquitaine). Built in the 16th century, it belongs successively to the Lestrade de la Cousse family, then to the Chabrier de la Joubertie. Its Renaissance staircase, the central element of the residence, was registered in 1928 before being classified in 2005, while the entire building was registered in 2003. This monument illustrates Renaissance civil architecture in Périgord, despite a fire in the 19th century that destroyed part of the original home.
The staircase, of square plane with a central vacuum bounded by four columns, is distinguished by its ceilings with carved caissons. These include Venus and Eros, as well as an interlaced monogram (H and S) evoking the families of Hautefort and Solminihac. The crawling balusters of the first flight and the ornaments of the bearings, such as the hammered coat of arms, testify to a careful decor. The property, still private, is located at 1 rue de la Sagesse and 11 Place du Coderc, on the right bank of the Isle, in the preserved area of Périgueux.
The hotel of Lestrade should not be confused with another homonymous hotel located 5 Romane Street in Périgueux. Its history reflects the family alliances and architectural prestige of the Renaissance in Périgord, where private hotels served as residences for local elites. The progressive protection of its elements (scaling, then entire building) underscores its heritage importance, despite the transformations that have taken place over the centuries.
