Origin and history

The Hotel de Mauroy is a private hotel built around 1550 in Troyes, on land left vacant after the great fire of 1524. Turned into an aristocratic residence by Jean de Mauroy, lord of Colasverdey and alderman of Troyes, he became a symbol of reconstruction after the disaster. Its architecture reflects the influence of the Renaissance, a period of renewal for the city.

Jean de Mauroy and his wife, Louise De Pleur, intended by will the hotel for charitable use: it will house in 1582 the orphanage of the Trinity, where children learned knitting. The chapel, inaugurated in 1584 by Claude de Baufremont, was managed by the brothers of the Hôpital de la Redemption de Paris. This social project, rare for the time, allowed the building to escape sale during the Revolution.

In the 19th century, the hotel had various vocations: public ball, estaminet, drapery workshop, and then seat of a local newspaper. Acquired by the city of Troyes in 1966, it was restored by the Companions of the Devoir to house the House of Tool and Worker Thought, a museum dedicated to craft tools. His philatelic history was marked by a stamp issued in 1978.

Ranked as a historic monument in 1862, the Hotel de Mauroy illustrates the evolution of urban uses, from noble residence to cultural institution. Its preservation bears witness to the heritage importance attached to the buildings linked to the social and artisanal history of Troyes, a city marked by its textile and humanist past.
