Origin and history
The Hotel de Mongenet is a private hotel built in 1549, located at 2 rue Baron-Bouvier in the Old Vesoul district. This monument, emblematic of Renaissance civil architecture, is distinguished by its elevation and roof, characteristic of this period. It was the first building in Vesoul to receive protection for historical monuments, with an official inscription from 1934.
The construction of the hotel in 1549 is part of the urban development and enrichment of the local elites under Francis I. Vesoul, then prosperous city of Franche-Comté, saw the emergence of aristocratic or bourgeois residences reflecting Italian and French artistic influences. The hotel of Mongenet, by its central style and location, bears witness to this social and cultural dynamic.
Protected for its façade and roof by decree of 26 March 1934, the hotel illustrates the early heritage interest for the Renaissance building in Haute-Saône. Its conservation is now part of the development of the Vesulian heritage, alongside other historical monuments of the city. The Merimée base (notice PA00102290) and local sources, like Monumentum, document its history and architecture.
