Origin and history

Hotel de Montcalm is a private hotel located in Montpellier, in the Hérault department, in the Occitanie region. This monument is distinguished by its architecture typical of 17th century urban hotels, with a quadrilateral courtyard and a garden below. Its spatial organization consists of two courtyards with different levels, a vaulted porch, a hollowed-out staircase, and a gallery opening onto the garden, reflecting the architectural codes of the era.

The first works date from 1651, sponsored by Jeanne de Calvet, wife of François de Montcalm, and carried out by mason Antoine Limagne. A major campaign in 1680 concerned the gallery on the garden side and probably the staircase, under the direction of mason Antoine Giral. The façade on the Old Courier Street preserves Gothic remains from the early 16th century, reflecting an earlier occupation of the site. The hotel has been partially protected since 1944, with its staircase inscribed as historical monuments.

The building illustrates the evolution of Montpellieran private hotels, combining medieval heritage and classical innovations. Its enclaved plan, with a narrow entrance passage and internal courtyards, meets the urban constraints of the time. The presence of a frieze of Gothic bays and Renaissance elements underscores the historical stratification of the building, typical of architectural transformations in Languedoc between the 16th and 17th centuries.
