Origin and history

The Hotel de Pomereu is a private hotel built on the site of two former 18th century hotels, the Hotel de Maillebois and the Hotel Duret. The first, destroyed by a fire during the Commune in 1871, was bought by Armand de Pomereu d'Aligre, Marquis and owner of the Duret Hotel. The latter entrusted architect David de Pénanrun, the pupil of Victor Baltard, with the reconstruction of a single building between 1872 and 1874, in an elegant Louis XV style. The hotel thus became a symbol of post-Haussmannian Parisian architecture, mixing the legacy of the Enlightenment and modernity of the Second Empire.

The Pomereu d'Aligre family kept the hotel until 1947, when it was sold to the Caisse des dépôts et consignations. Initially transformed into a residence for the Director General, it will later house offices and reception rooms. The hotel hosted major events, such as the creation of the Fondation de France in 1969 or the preparatory seminar for the G8 summit in 1989. Its honorary staircase, classified as a historical monument in 1979, as well as several salons with preserved decorations (woodworks of the eighteenth, paintings, marquetries), testify to its past prestige.

The hotel of Pomereu is part of a wider heritage network linked to Armand de Pomereu d-Aligre, which also owned the castles of Baronville (Eure-et-Loir) and Daubeuf (Seine-Maritime), both remodelled under its direction. Today, a public property, the hotel remains a place of power and representation, exceptionally open to the public during the European Heritage Days. Its history reflects the changes in Paris, between aristocratic heritage and modern institutional functions.
