Origin and history

The Hotel de Ricard is a private hotel located in Montpellier, in the Hérault department, Occitanie region. Built in the 17th century, this monument underwent major alterations in the 19th century, losing much of its original features, with the exception of its gate and entrance passage. These preserved elements still bear witness to the decorative style of the period, thanks in particular to works mentioned in an act of dowry release dating from 1596, when the house was transmitted to Jean Janvier, auditor at the chancery of Toulouse and clerk at the court of aids.

The house, in its present state, is organized around a small inner courtyard. It was partially preserved by its inscription as historic monuments on 28 July 1945, a protection that specifically concerns its door. Although its staircase and most of its initial features have disappeared, the Hotel de Ricard remains an example of Montpellierian civil architecture, marked by successive transformations reflecting the urban and social evolutions of the city.

Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum bases, place the hotel's precise address at 35 rue Saint-Guilhem. This building illustrates the dynamics of redevelopment of private hotels in Occitanie, where functional and aesthetic needs have often won over the integral conservation of original heritage. The Creative Commons license associated with certain photographs of the monument allows us to document its current aspect, while highlighting its integration into the contemporary urban fabric.
