Origin and history

The Rochegude hotel is a private hotel built around 1685 in Albi, in the Tarn department. It is distinguished by its U-shaped architecture around a central courtyard, with alternating brick and stone facades. The main body is surmounted by a pediment decorated with the coat of arms of the Rochegude family, adding an aristocratic touch to the whole. The garden and the terraced avant-corps date from the early 19th century, under the impulse of the Marquis de Rochegude, who acquired the building in 1787.

The interior has undergone major alterations, but retains a marble staircase with stone balusters dating back to the late seventeenth century. The woodwork on the first floor of the south wing comes from the old archdiocese, integrated in 1908. The vaulted cellars, with their original elements (bread oven, double fireplace, tank), testify to the domestic and functional use of the hotel. Since 31 October 1986, it has belonged to the municipality of Albi.

The building illustrates Albi's architectural and social evolution, combining 17th century heritage and subsequent transformations. Its inscription protects key elements such as facades, roofs, terraces, and the interior staircase, reflecting its heritage importance in the Occitanie region. The precise location at 28 rue Rochegude makes it an accessible historical landmark in the city centre.
