Origin and history
The Hotel de Roquemore, located in Montpellier, is an emblematic historical monument of the first half of the seventeenth century. It is distinguished by its facade on street, a rare example of architectural ornamentation of this period. The upper floors have a prescription of canned pilasters, alternating between composite and corinthian orders, supporting cornices with denticles or modillons. The third floor, in attic, adds visual complexity with cut pediments and volutes, while gargoyles crown the whole.
The inner courtyard is framed by three-storey buildings on the street side and two-storey buildings on the other sides. The ground floor of the latter seems to have been redesigned in the 18th century, as evidenced by the partially walled arches and the encircling doors added. The facades on street and courtyard, as well as the roofs, were classified by order of 23 April 1945, highlighting their exceptional heritage value.
The building illustrates the evolution of architectural styles between the 17th and 18th centuries, with classical elements preserved despite later modifications. Its location, at the corner of the streets of Cannau and Girone, makes it a major urban landmark in the historic centre of Montpellier. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), perhaps reflecting uncertainties about its exact limits or conservation status.
The legal protections applied in 1945 aim to preserve the facades and roofs, the most representative elements of its history. Although sources do not mention current use (visits, rentals, accommodation), its status as a Historic Monument makes it a potentially accessible place for cultural or heritage activities. Available photographs, such as Auregann's Creative Commons license, document its current appearance.
