Origin and history

The Hotel de Roquesaule, also known as the Hotel de Roquesante, is an iconic mansion located in the city of Aix-en-Provence. This monument, built in the seventeenth century, illustrates the civil architecture of this period in an area marked by strong cultural and economic activity. Its partial designation as historic monuments in 1929 reflects its heritage value, particularly for its street façade, protected by ministerial decree.

In the 17th century, Aix-en-Provence was a dynamic city, seat of the Parliament of Provence and place of residence of many noble and bourgeois families. Private hotels, such as Roquesaule, reflected the social status of their owners and provided a framework for social and administrative life. These buildings, often located in the city centre, were designed to combine comfort, prestige and representation, in a context where urban planning and architecture played a key role in asserting local power.

The protection of the façade of the Hotel de Roquesaule in 1929 is part of a broader approach to preserving the heritage of Aix. This partial inscription, although limited to a specific architectural element, underlines the importance attached to the preservation of the material traces of that time. Today, this private hotel is part of the urban landscape of Aix-en-Provence, alongside other historical monuments that bear witness to its rich past.
