Origin and history
The Senesterra Hotel is an iconic Renaissance building located in the historic centre of Perpignan, in the Eastern Pyrenees. Built in the 16th century, it illustrates the refined civil architecture of this period, marked by the influence of classical styles and carved ornamentation. Its classification as historical monuments by decree of 23 March 1928 underlines its exceptional heritage value, especially for its preserved architectural elements.
The façade on the street opens with a carriage door in the middle of the hanger, flanked by ionic pilasters and surmounted by a classical pediment with modillons. This passage leads to a vestibule adorned with a moulure chambranle door, crowned with an accolade resting on the heads of angelots, typical of Renaissance decorative art. The inner courtyard houses an exterior staircase leading to a gallery on the first floor, composed of three arches supported by columns with capitals carved of figures.
Inside, several remarkable elements are protected: the door at the start of the staircase, whose room is decorated with heads forming capitals and an archvolt in braid, as well as an open window and a door to the apartments on the gallery, both decorated in the same style. These architectural details testify to the know-how of the artisans of the time and the high social status of the original owners, probably an affluent or noble family of Perpignan.
The exact address of the hotel, 7 rue du Théâtre, places the monument in the heart of a historic district where urban activity was intense in the 16th century. Perpignan, then under Catalan influence and close to the Spanish border, was a commercial and cultural crossroads, which explains the decorative richness of its private hotels. Today, the Senesterra hotel remains a preserved example of this heritage, accessible from the rue du Théâtre, although its conditions of visit are not specified in the available sources.
